Intravenous local anaesthesia

This anaesthesia technique involves the installation of a pneumatic tourniquet after the installation of an intravenous catheter on the hand or foot. The progressive tightening of a rubber band empties the limb of its blood up to the level of the tourniquet, which is then inflated. The band is then removed and the anaesthetic is injected through the catheter.

It is performed on adults for short procedures, primarily operations of the forearm and the hand. Some skin or trophic lesions can prevent the installation of the elastic band.
