About the cardiothoracic surgery unit

Cardiothoracic surgery involves the surgical treatment of the heart, its blood vessels and the thorax. Heart surgery Heart surgery interventions commonly include the correction of congenital cardiopathies in children and adults, the replacement or repair of cardiac valves, coronary bypass surgery, surgery of the great vessels, cardiovascular emergencies, and heart transplants. Thoracic surgery Thoracic surgery interventions include interventions on the trachea, the bronchi and the lungs, the treatment of pleural conditions, of the chest wall and of the oesophagus.

The Cardiothoracic Surgery department surgically treats heart and lung conditions.

HEART CONDITIONS

  • Coronary bypass surgery for heart artery stenosis and angina pectoris.

These bypass procedures are conducted through the patient’s veins or arteries.
Priority is given to procedures conducted through the arteries as these feature a permeability that is significantly greater, especially on the long term.

  • Repairing and replacing heart valves, valvular heart disease.

Valvular replacements are conducted with biological or mechanical prostheses.
Increasingly, badly-affected valves can be repaired, which is highly advantageous in terms of the patient’s survival and quality of life.

  • The surgical treatment of thoracic aneurysms.

When the situation relates to a ruptured aneurysm, they can be replaced with major operations that generally require the general cooling of the patient.

LUNG CONDITIONS

  • Resections of the lung, segmentectomies, lobectomies, pneumonectomies for neoplasia (lung cancer)
  • The surgical treatment of pleural infections, of empyemata.
  • Recurrent pneumothorax.
  • Closed thoracic trauma (accidents) or open thoracic trauma (gunshot wounds or stab wounds)

Thanks to the development of surgical techniques, the quality of anaesthesia and intensive care, and the collaboration of the entire medical and surgical team, cardiothoracic surgery is now performed with increased safety and highly satisfactory results.

Of course, the unit collaborates closely with the vascular surgery department.

The department was created in the Europe Hospitals in 1993.

For years it was managed by a surgeon, an anaesthetist and a reanimation specialist, but it now includes four cardiothoracic surgeons, two of whom are university professors, four anaesthetists and four intensive care surgeons.
