DEFINITION

Proctology is a speciality of the gastroenterologist, who deals with the anal region and rectum.

 

THE MAIN PATHOLOGIES DIAGNOSED

  • Haemorrhoids are the most common pathology.
  • Fissures in and around the anus.
  • Anal fistulas, which are real abnormal galleries that pass through the wall of the rectum.
  • Anitis.
  • Anal incontinence.
  • Terminal constipation linked to difficulty in evacuating stools.
  • Proctitis, also known as rectitis, which is inflammation of the rectum.
  • Rectal tumours, including rectal cancer.
  • Cancer of the anus.

There are several techniques and methods available for exploring the area, such as anuscopy, rectoscopy or digital rectal examination.

 

EXAM PREPARATION

1 to 2 hours before your appointment, you will be asked to perform an evacuating enema.
